Published by The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the American Ornithologists' Union, 1997
Paperback. Condition: New. Species account number 304 in the Birds of North America Life Histories for the 21st Century series. In 1992 the American Ornithologists' Union in partnership with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia undertook the publication of species accounts for each of the more than 700 species which breed in the United States and Canada. These illustrated reviews provide comprehensive summaries of the current knowledge of the species, with range maps and an extensive list of references. The series is complete, in 716 parts. The item number is the unique number for each species account; accounts are numbered in order of publication. Accounts are 8 ½ x 11 inch booklets which include information about distribution, systematics, migration, habitat, sounds, behavior, breeding, appearance, and conservation. This issue is a reprint of the original printing. No stock of the original printingremains. These photographic copies are barely distinguishable from the originals; interior pages are in black & white and lack the blue in graphs and line drawings.

Description: This original antique print originates from 'Oeuvres completes, - suivies de ses continuateurs Daubenton, Lacepede, Cuvier, Dumeril, Poiret, Lesson et Geoffreoy-St-Hilaire; seule edition complete avec figures coloriees.', by Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, published 1828-1833 Bruxelles, chez Th. Lejeune, Libraire-editeurs.Artists and Engravers: Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (Sept.7, 1707 - April 16, 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Darwin himself, in his foreword to the 6th edition of the origin of Species, credited Aristotle with foreshadowing the concept of natural selection but also stated that "the first author who in modern times has treated it in a scientific spirit was Buffon". The Lycee Buffon in Paris is named after him. Buffon is best remembered for his great work Histoire naturelle, generale et particuliere (1749-1778: in 36 volumes, 8 additional volumes published after his death by Lacepede). Manuscript / Paper Collectible
2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. The female recipient is unidentified, but would appear to be the editor of a magazine, enquiring after the progress of a 'paper' Ellis has agreed to write on 'Java Sparrows'. Ellis explains that she has 'begun a better story in the Child's department which it is consequently necessary to finish first', to appear 'in the number for June', but that 'your paper shall certainly come next'. The handwriting is not altogether straightforward, but Ellis appears to say here that 'stories will not always [write?] up when [necessary?]'. The letter ends: 'Notwithstanding the plea on which I hope to obtain your pardon for delay, I still feel that I ought to have written before if only to [?] for my not writing the paper so soon as you might expect.'.
