Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Black cloth stamped in silver on spine. Black cloth is clean. Light shelfwear along panel edges/tips. A touch of toning to endpaper gutters which is not uncommon for Doubleday titles from this era, thanks to the cheap materials Doubleday was notorious for using at the time. Small, one-inch sliver of discoloration along fore-edge of front endpaper. Small faint discoloration on bottom page edges, barely. Original protected dust jacket shows light scuffing, minor soiling, and a couple of tiny chips. Inscribed volume of unique provenance is accompanied by hand-written correspondence to a personal friend, Ricardo Mandojana - an early pioneer of surfing in his own right. This volume and ephemeral effects tell a story in and of itself concerning the novel, Benchley, Mandojana, and the intriguing milieu of the '70s. Beautifully signed and illustrated with shark doodle at endpaper: "For Ricardo. Eight years late and very cheap - Nothing sells for 6.95 any more. Peter Benchley, 6-2-82." Stylish inscription and humored protrayal of the great white monster. Signed by legendary surfer originally of Argentina at title page: "R. Mandojana, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Oct. '74." Also, pictorial bookplate inside cover: From the Library of "Ricardo Mandojana". Very unique and charming plate features illustration of Japanese ocean canoes encountering waves of tidal size with Mount Fuji in b.g. Additionally, set into volume is hand written letter on Benchley's personal stationery to Mandojana: "35 Boudinot Street, Princeton, New Jersey. Dear Ricardo - Thank you for your note, and for sending the Post obituary. Smith reviews the nature and style of "Jaws," the novel and its film production at Martha's Vineyard. Red Smith may very well be the Red that Benchley refers to in signed letter. Verso Red Smith article is photograph and caption of Roberto "Rocky" Duran of Panama, a rising boxer at the time. Duran appears to have been nick-named prior to the Sly Stone film.
