Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Cloth covered boards (hardcover), 136p, illustrations (chiefly in colour), 30 cm. Fine, clean, crisp, no internal marks. German language edition. Jeff Wall (born 1946) is both one of the most innovative and classic photographers of his generation. He became well known in the 1970s for his large-format transparencies, backlit by fluorescent lightboxes. His subject matter is varied and wide-ranging, based on situations experienced by the artist that are then recreated for the camera. Wall's combination of color prints and lightbox images, which he calls "cinematic" photographs, were completely novel and somewhat controversial when he first used them: only black-and-white photographs were considered appropriate for a serious museum exhibit. In 1996, Wall expanded his repertoire to begin producing monochrome images, further exploring the cinematographic--particularly film noir--and the aesthetics of classic photography. This volume, accompanying a Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition, begins with these monochrome pictures and continues through the present. Many of the works are reproduced here for the first time.

Condition: Wie neu. Steidl, Göttingen. 2003. First edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Hardback without jacket (as issued) and slipcase. 270 mm x 260 mm. 156 pages. 28 colour plates. 7 tritone plates. Text in english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! For over 20 years, Jeff Wall has been developing an outstanding body of work, using photography in an innovative way which has contributed significantly to placing the medium of photography firmly on the map of contemporary art. In his carefully staged and composed images, sometimes digitally altered, placed in back-lit boxes borrowed from advertising, he has explored a wide range of social and political themes including urban violence, racism, poverty, gender and class conflicts, history, memory, representation, and many others. His photographs, in color or in black and white, maintain a constant dialogue with great genre painting of the 19th century, and truly make him "a painter of modern life", an expression coined by Charles Baudelaire. In Jeff Wall s photographs, the camera s job is to register the effect that the invisible presence of the camera has on the world it inhabits. Without the camera, the effect would not exist; without the photograph, it would not be visible. The camera does not only register the world but also its own impact on the world. Jeff Wall s photographs, which at first seem to be documentary in nature, are often carefully constructed. Influenced by cinema and art history, Wall mixes documentary techniques with staged settings and digital collages of different images. This selection of images by the winner of the 2002 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography reflects both his interest in the pictorial practice of photography and in his subjects.Jeff Wall was born in 1946 in Vancouver, Canada, where he still lives and works. He has practised photography since the 1960s. He has been widely exhibited over the past two decades; most recently his works were shown in Frankfurt, Montreal, Basel, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Documenta 11 was his fourth, after 1982, 1987 and 1997. He is the author of many critical texts on art and the subject of numerous monographs.***************Steidl, Göttingen. 2003. Erstausgabe.
