No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Original letter handwritten and signed in black ink by Joe E. Brown. Letter is on light beige stationery from the Biltmore Hotel in Dayton, Ohio. No date, circa 1929-1940s. 6" x 9 1/2." Two pages. Letter is virtually pristine and intact except for two horizontal fold lines on each page (perhaps original) and light age toning. A Fine copy. Joe E. Brown (1891-1973) was an American comedian and actor who became well-known for his comedic timing, portrayal of amicable movie characters, and iconic smile. Brown starred in several films including Save My Child (1932), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Alibi Ike (1935), Earthworm Tractors (1936), and Some Like it Hot (1959). He also did much philanthropic work during World War II. Even before the establishment of USO programs, Brown entertained American soldiers stationed in Alaska, Australia, the Caribbean, Guadalcanal, and New Zealand. For his work in boosting morale, Brown became only one of two civilians to be awarded the Bronze Medal during WWII. In this letter, Brown addresses a man named "Bill" about financial matters. The letter reads, "Dear Bill:- Just a hurried note as I must dash to the theatre--Five frolics today. Our business here has been very big and if the other cities turn out as well the trip will be an unqualified success. The main object of this note is--How do you want that check made out? Was sorry to hear we were tied by Stanford, but it might do the kids some good. Give all the gang my best and of course that includes you and yours. As always, Joe E. Brown." Brown has also written a brief note with an address below his signature. The verso of the first page has brief signed correspondence in pencil and appears to answer Brown's question about check, although it may be by another person other than Bill. This correspondence reads, "Re: your inquiry Sunday; Make check payable, Young Men's Club Special Account; [signed] Bob Campbell, Pres. Young Men's Club." The stationery touts the Biltmore as "Dayton's Newest and Finest Hotel" in an illustrated header. The Dayton Biltmore Hotel first opened its doors in Dayton, Ohio in 1929. It featured the Beaux-Arts style of architecture popular at the time and became a prominent hotel that saw many celebrity guests. While originally managed by Bowman-Biltmore Hotels, the Dayton Biltmore changed owners a few times over the years. In 1946, the Dayton Biltmore became part of Hilton Hotels. It later became a Sheraton Hotel in 1965. Today, the original Dayton Biltmore building still stands to this day as a multi-use complex comprising senior living apartments and commercial businesses. The Dayton Biltmore was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Signed by Author(s).
