In seinen Händen hält er eine Märtyrerpalme und seine Zungenreliquie. Im Zuge der Kanonisierung wurde 1719 das Grab des Heiligen im Veitsdom untersucht, dabei fand man angeblich seine unversehrte rote Zunge, die seitdem als Reliquie verehrt wird. Johannes von Nepomuk erlitt sein Martyrium, indem er in Moldau geworfen wurde. Vorangegangen war eine Auseinandersetzung mit König Wenzel und dem Prager Erzbischof Jenzenstein.
