Made across a 32-year span, the works in Tabula Rasa unite the central themes in the art of celebrated British artist John Stezaker, from the capacities of collage to the current flow in an age of mass media. This volume brings silkscreens on canvas from the early 1990s and film still collages from the 1990s and 2009 together for the first time. Accompanying full-colour illustrations and a series of installation views of Stezaker's work at The Approach, London, an essay by art critic and cultural commentator Michael Bracewell looks at the connections within Stezaker's practice, centering on notions of screens, voids and cut-outs ISBN 1905464304.
Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 17 x 23 cm, 112 Seiten/pages with 10 color & 23 bw.illustrations - In the Fumetti series Stezaker continues his work with publicity film portraits. Instead of working with old bromides, however, he takes portraits from film annuals of the 1950s and 1960s and deconstructs perfect hair and makeup to make monstrous hybrids. Fumetti is an Italian comic tradition using photos instead of illustrations.

Add to basketFine in publishers decorated wrappers. 1st edition. Illustrated throughout. Spanning more than three decades, this richly illustrated monograph demonstrates John Stezaker's engagement with the ceaseless flow of images resulting from mechanical reproduction, mass media and popular culture. His intervention into these images through collage, excision, reconfiguration, inversion or occlusion can be seen to interrupt their everyday circulation in a profound way: image and perception alike are questioned, rearranged and opened to new possibilities. Through their transformation Stezaker's images acquire poetic resonance, and, in many cases, a disquieting allure. With over 120 illustrations, this monograph presents the first overview of John Stezaker's work on paper from the 1970s onwards, featuring his found images, collages, image fragments and a selection from 'The 3rd Person Archive' series.Essays by Dawn Ades and Michael Bracewell, as well as a conversation between the artist and curators Daniel F. Herrmann and Christophe Gallois, place Stezaker's work in a historical context and analyse his methodology. ISBN 9781905464333.

Inscribed by the artist in pencil on inner cover. An extremely rare publication. Publisher unstated, but Ridinghouse's John Stezaker resource (2010) suggests this was published to coincide with the artist's first solo show at the Sigi Krauss Gallery in London. Contains many illustrations and diagrams for visual works involving photographs and film projectors, alongside linguistic/semantic conceptual experiments. Precedes the artist's work with collage material. Bound with a plastic clasp. Edges a little tanned, otherwise very good condition.

Add to basketCard covers, stapled spine. Condition: Fair. First Edition. 21 x 30cm. Side-stapled paperback, unpaginated [11 leaves printed recto only]. Undated [c.1970]. An extraordinary early conceptual documentation of the artist's experiments with film, with sections on 'Film as Footage' and 'Footage as Film' (predating the artist's collage work). The second section of this publication details a linguistic exercise: a performance artwork involving transcription and re-transcription of an essay read aloud. Extremely rare, unrecorded in Ridinghouse's 2010 John Stezaker bibliography. In 'A History of Artists' Film and Video in Britain', researcher David Curtis cites the "only tangible" notes on Time Deletions to be the 1975 RCA catalogue for Codes and Structures, which this document precedes by five years, and which constitute the original instructional score. Covers slightly foxed, otherwise very good.
