Poncins gab sein in Französisch und Englisch abgefasstes Manuskript einem Herausgeber von Time-Life Books, der es in vorliegender Form brachte und publizierte. Es wurde vor allem in Amerika ein großer Erfolg. Der adlige, französische Autor (1900-1962) und Geschäftsmann hatte sich enttäuscht von der "zivilisierten" Welt abgewandt und war freier Journalist geworden.
