Oktober 1888 in Wellington; 9. Januar 1923 in Fontainebleau) war eine neuseeländisch-britische Schriftstellerin. Literaturgeschichtliche Einordnung: Mansfield wurde vor allem durch ihre zahlreichen Kurzgeschichten bekannt. Sie prägte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine neue Form des essay writing". Auch war sie die erste britische Schriftstellerin, die von den Verlagen und Publizisten Verträge verlangte, deren Klauseln alleine nach Mansfields Willen und ihren finanziellen und künstlerischen Vorstellungen formuliert waren. Leben: Katherine Mansfield verbrachte als Tochter eines Händlers ihre frühe Kindheit in der kleinen Ortschaft Karori, einige Kilometer entfernt von Wellington (Neuseeland). Sie ging dort auf die Wellington Girls' High School und sammelte ihre ersten literarischen Erfahrungen in der Schülerzeitung dieser Schule. Als sie elf Jahre alt war, zogen ihre Eltern nach Wellington, in den Stadtteil Thornton. 1903 verließ sie Neuseeland und besuchte drei Jahre lang das Queen's College in London, das von Charles Kingsley speziell für die Bildung und Erziehung von Frauen gegründet worden war. Nach einer zweijährigen Rückkehr nach Neuseeland lebte sie für den Rest ihres Lebens in Europa und studierte mit finanzieller Unterstützung ihres Vaters Musik und Literatur. Sie interessierte sich vor allem für die französische und deutsche Sprache und schrieb ihre ersten Texte. Schließlich trat sie den Londoner Kulturkreisen bei und traf dort die Schriftsteller D. H. Lawrence und Virginia Woolf, mit denen sie eine intensive Freundschaft einging. Zu dieser Zeit wurde sie von Garnet Trowell, einem Freund der Familie aus Neuseeland, schwanger und reiste auf Anraten ihrer Mutter nach Bad Wörishofen. Während ihres Aufenthaltes dort erlitt sie eine Fehlgeburt, als sie ihren Koffer auf einen Schrank heben wollte. Zurück in England erlangte sie bei verschiedenen Verlagshäusern Aufmerksamkeit und änderte für ihre erste große Publikation In a German Pension" ihren bis dahin gültigen Namen Kathleen Beauchamp in ihr Pseudonym Katherine Mansfield. 1917 erkrankte Katherine Mansfield an Tuberkulose. 1918 heiratete sie den Literaturkritiker John Middleton Murry, den sie 1911 kennengelernt hatte. Später wurde sie eine Schülerin des griechisch-armenischen Weisheitslehrers Georges I. Gurdjieff, in dessen Institut für die harmonische Entwicklung des Menschen in Fontainebleau bei Paris sie ihre letzte Lebensphase verbrachte und 1923 an ihrer Tuberkulose starb. Katherine Mansfield ist auf dem Friedhof zu Avon bei Fontainebleau begraben; eine Straße wurde ebenfalls nach ihr benannt.
