In the 19th century, artists, attracted by the low rents in this area, involved this studio. In the early 20th century, until the First World War broke out in 1914, the building was inhabited by Picasso, Modigliani and Kees van Dongen, among others, and was a focal point for avant-garde writers and painters. Le Bateau-Lavoir (wash ship or floating wash house) was originally a dance hall and piano factory. In 1889 it was divided into 20 small rooms, located on either side of a long corridor that resembled a ship's gangway. The building was actually a shack and had a strange layout. There was no heating. Since there was only one tap, the French writer and painter Max Jacob would ironically call it Le Bateau-Lavoir.
