Condition: Gut. pp. 142.158. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, cover very lightly rubbed and a bit bumped, otherwise good. - From the text: We read in the fourth book of the Aeneid that unhappy Dido, when Anna came to her as she lay dying, "ter sese attollens cubitoque adnixa leuauit, ter reuoluta toro est. . . (Aen. 4. 6901)". Some ancient critic, feeling that there must be more than met the eye in this passage, explained that ter referred to the three wars that Rome was destined to fight against Carthage! I suppose that most modern readers, familiar with the scene in the sixth book, where Virgil says that Aeneas catching at the shade of Anchises "ter conatus ibi collo dare bracchia circum; ter frustra comprensa manus effugit imago {Aen. 6. 7001)" will feel that ter as used in the similarly pathetic passage about Dido is not to be explained on the basis of any symbolic reference to the Punic Wars, and will smile, or shudder, when they see this curious explanation.
