A PARTIAL LETTERPRESS, PARTIAL HANDWRITTEN DOCUMENT, MEASURING 13" X 8" AND ISSUED IN THE PORT OF PICTOU, NOVA SCOTIA, AUTHORIZING, IN THE NAME OF KING WILLIAM THE FOURTH, THE SHIPMENT OF COAL ON THE "VESSEL CALLED THE EUPHRATES WHOSE MASTER IS JOSEPH SMITH" FROM THE PORT OF PICTOU, NOVA SCOTIS FOR "SOMERSET AND OTHER PLACES BEYOND THE SEAS". AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE IS A LARGE, 2 1/8" X 1 1/2" COAT OF ARMS, TWO LIONS RAMPANT, SUPPORTING A SHIELD TOPPED WITH A CROWN. THE BANNER UPON WHICH THEY STAND READS, "DIEU ET MON DROIT". THE DATE IS SEPT. 6, 1836, AND THERE IS THE OFFICER'S SEAL IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER. AN INTERESTING WATERMARK IN THE PAPER, DEPICTING A SEATED WOMAN WARRIOR WITH A SHIELD AND SPEAR. ELEGANTLY SIGNED.
