Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Unnumbered 11x14 black and white print. Features a view of the courtyard at East 12th Street and a lengthy, poetic caption/inscription in Ginsbergs hand, above his signature. "Breakfast tea kitchen window East 12th Street Courtyard familiar old wet brick-walled Atlantis-Sargasso as if underse…a undulation of tides I focus on the clothesline raindrops, August 18, 1954. For Herbert Huncke his 79th birthday in this paradise such as it is. Allen Ginsberg." On back of photo in pencil: "BK1-24A Neg #34 B6." In ink on back: "Memorial weekend 1993 For Louis Cartwright Herbert Huncke, to sell" A Beat association with real significance. Huncke is widely credited with coining the term Beat. He met William S. Burroughs in 1942, and despite his early suspicions that Burroughs was an undercover agent of one vintage or another. He met Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac during the same decade, when he was an unpublished poet. Huncke was an avatar of the life they admired familiar with drugs and crime, fluent in street slang, and unhindered by the mores of the day. Ginsberg was picked up for his role in a car crash in the 40s, at a time when Huncke lived with him and Huncke, who was picked up at the same time, took the rap, serving five years in New York state prison. Someone had to do the bit,Huncke said. Ginsberg spent six months in a mental hospital. That Ginsberg should inscribe this photo to Huncke and his longtime partner Louis Cartwright, so many decades later, attests to the enduring bond the two Beat figures shared. Size: 11"x15". Signed and Inscribed By Allen Ginsberg. Book.
