The Knife Grinder, an original line engraving by Enid Butcher (1902 - 1991) on fine cream wove paper (plate size 125 x 137 mm) initialled in the plate, and signed in pencil and numbered 39/40. Butcher graduated from The Royal College Of Art in 1927. Her tutor Robert Sargent Austin, under who's guidance she mastered the art of line engraving, introduced her to his publishers, The Twenty One Gallery, who also represented other young artists with growing reputations, including Stanley Badmin, Paul Drury, Robin Tanner and Graham Sutherland. Between 1928 and 1933, she produced fifteen engravings which were listed in Fine Prints Of The Year. Her prints have a Durer like quality and are reminiscent of an earlier age.
