First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: " Elizabeth and Hacks from Peter, Christmas 1955". The author Bertha Gladys Stern (1890-1973) wrote under the name G. B. Stern. She was known as Gladys as a child, later substituted Bronwen for Bertha, and was called Peter by her friends (but Tynx by Rebecca West). A very good copy, spine faintly cocked, spine ends slightly bumped; in the original dust jacket, a touch soiled, spine sunned, a few short nicks and short closed tears, extremities a little rubbed, colours still very bright and dust jacket unclipped. Family saga from 1926 to 1954 - Gillian, aged 14 at the start belongs to the "failure branch" of a large English family "brilliant in celebrities." Very good.…
