The book is recognized as part of Jacobs? broader literary and philosophical output, often blending personal experience, historical perspective, and spiritual inquiry. The author, Thornwell Jacobs (1877 - 1956) was a historian, author, university founder and Presbyterian minister. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary and is best known as the refounder and long-serving president of Oglethorpe University (1915 thru 1944). . . . . . Stephen Schmidt (Oglethorpe Class of 1940) to whom the this book was presented with compliments of the Oglethorpe Univ Press, attended Oglethorpe on a football scholarship. He played quarterback for the Oglethorpe and graduated in 1940. In World War II he served as a B-29 bomber pilot, naming his plane "Stormy Petrel" in honor of his alma maters mascot. He is credited with dropping the last bomb of the World War II. After the war he became CEO of Dixie Seal and Stamp Company; Co-founded the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the Braves? 400 Club and served on Oglethorpe?s Board of Trustees from 1963, earning the nickname *Mr. Oglethorpe.* The Stephen J. Schmidt Sport and Recreation Center and a residence hall at Oglethorpe University are named in his honor. In 1992 he was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
