From the introduction: "Plenty of books have been written on knowledge-based systems, but I hope that this one is substantially different from previous ones. An emphasis has been placed on showing how knowledge-based systems and related techniques can solve practical engineering and scientific problems. I have therefore tried to describe a range of techniques with the help of realistic examples. Although various applications are explored, I have avoided merely surveying past engineering examples of knowledge-based systems. Instead, examples have been selected on the basis of the lessons that can be drawn from them. In an attempt to make the book more readable than most of the computing literature, my initial intention was to introduce all of the techniques as separate aspects of case studies in interpretation, diagnosis, design, planning and control.
