From the introduction: "Plenty of books have been written on knowledge-based systems, but I hope that this o…ne is substantially different from previous ones. An emphasis has been placed on showing how knowledge-based systems and related techniques can solve practical engineering and scientific problems. I have therefore tried to describe a range of techniques with the help of realistic examples. Although various applications are explored, I have avoided merely surveying past engineering examples of knowledge-based systems. Instead, examples have been selected on the basis of the lessons that can be drawn from them. In an attempt to make the book more readable than most of the computing literature, my initial intention was to introduce all of the techniques as separate aspects of case studies in interpretation, diagnosis, design, planning and control. After deciding that diagnosis is simply a special case of interpretation, I had four distinct application areas to discuss, with the intention of introducing appropriate techniques along the way. Nonetheless, there was still some fundamental knowledge of tools and techniques that I needed to assume. Therefore I finally settled on dividing the book into two parts.
