Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A fascinating study of the easternmost province in Canada, Labrador. Labrador is the distinct, northerly region of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It comprises the mainland portion of the province, separated from the island of Newfoundland by the Strait of Belle Isle. It is the largest and northernmost geographical region in Atlantic Canada. This history and cultural study of Newfoundland and its people was written by a number of contributors, including Wilfred Grenfell, a notable medical missionary who was sent to Newfoundland in 1892 to improve the plight of coastal inhabitants and fishermen. Within this mission Grenfell not only opened cottage hospitals along the coast of Labrador, but also helped to develop schools, an orphanage, cooperatives, industrial work projects, and social work. Moreover, although founded originally to serve the local area, the mission also developed to include the aboriginal peoples and settlers along the coasts of Labrador and the eastern side of the Great Northern Peninsula of northern Newfoundland.[ With illustrations and maps. In a decorative green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Corners are bumped. Spine is slightly cocked. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good. book.
