Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Signed presentation inscription from Anaïs Nin to Claude Fredericks, playwright, printer and irrepressible diarist (and, as a classics professor, teacher of Donna Tartt and a person fictionalised in her 1992 novel The Secret History). In 1946 Fredericks was working with Nin at her Gemor Press in Greenwich Village; Nin found herself reading his journals (which eventually ran to a simply staggering 65,000 pages.). The inscription to the front free endpaper reads: 'Claude's diary. There were pages in the diary about an afternoon in the park, in the snow which contained the whole mysterious landscape of adolescent love with the mood of no footprints on the snow, the mood of beginning, the mood of the sharpest pain more naked in the gloved hands and muffled words. Anaïs'. Spotting to the top edge of the text block and light spotting to the preliminaries; a mark to the front free endpaper and front paste down endpaper; a few marks to the black cloth. Text pages largely very clean, bar some spotting at the top edge. Titles faded to spine. Ian Hugo (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).…

Wolf, with a handwritten thank you card from Nin signed "Anaïs Guiler" laid in. Octavo. Original black cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titling and decoration. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with some light toning and wear along the extremities. The first novel in Nin's celebrated Cities of the Interior series, interweaving the stories of several women, each emotionally inhibited in her own way: through self-doubt, fear, guilt, moral drift, and distrust.
