Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. Dust Jacket Condition: fair. First Edition. Octavo, 95pp., illustrated. Second issue binding, with repeated pattern of a stylized skyscraper (seemingly less common than the first issue). About very good in the publisher's fragile paper-covered baords with black cloth spine. Corners worn, inner hinges starting, and a partial split at the bottom of the front outer joint, and a very thin tidemark along the top edge of the first several leaves. In the rare dust jacket, presenting nicely in an archival jacket protector, but in two pieces, with some small chips at the extremities, thus in fair condition. Despite all defects, an exceptional association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by White in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper to playwright, Algonquin Round Table member, and New Yorker contributor Marc Connelly: "For Marc Connelly, (the bully) from Andy White." E. B. White was Andy to his friends, and no doubt the cheeky, brief inscription was something of an inside joke between friends. Connelly got his start in journalism in Pittsburgh, but made it to New York, where he joined Harold Ross's new magazine, The New Yorker, in its very early years. In 1926, White joined the staff, and Connelly later wrote, "It was White who brought the steel and the music to the magazine." Connelly is best remembered today for being a member of the Round Table, and for his ambitious play, "The Green Pastures." The play, based on Roark Bradford's short story collection "Ol' Man Adam," was the first Broadway production to feature an all-Black cast. "The Lady is Cold" was White's first regularly published book, and collects some poems which had been published in The New Yorker, alongside some original works. A wonderful copy, which brings together two writers who developed their reputations in the early years of Harold Ross's editorship of The New Yorker.
