Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition, first issue binding. On a separate piece of New Yorker stationary is typed 'With the compliments of H. W. Ross.' (Harold Wallace Ross was an American journalist who co-founded The New Yorker magazine in 1925 with his wife Jane Grant, and was its editor-in-chief until… his death.) Due to issues around the spine, I have priced this book at a considerable discount to most other first editions in first issue bindings. The spine is solidly bound, but some of the black material has lifted leaving the boards exposed. Some of the material can be glued back into place but I think some of it may be lost. It's a little hard to tell. There are also a couple of dents on the side of the spine and some loss of material at the top edge of the spine. The top and bottom edges of the spine have rub-through. The covers are mostly clean. There is a small light spot off the front bottom edge. There is some toning off the top and middle edges. The cover edges look pretty good. All four corners have spots of rub-through. I don't see any soiling on the page edges. The middle and bottom ones are deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job, two late pages have the slightest bit of jaggedness in two spots. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in very good condition. There are a few teeny tiny amber spots just off the top edge of the copyright and dedication pages. I'm not finding any soiling on any of the pages. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There aren't any markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The first edition had two bindings, with the blue and silver city skyline binding being the less common, issued in only 1,392 copies. 'In 1978, White was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize, citing his letters, essays and the full body of his work.' He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.'.

Boards. Condition: Near fine. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, xii, 96pp. First issue binding, with pictorial paper-covered boards and black cloth spine, title stamped in gilt on spine. The first printing, with Harper code "C-D" on copyright page, indicating a March 1929 publication. Lacking the publisher's scarce dust jac…ket. First edition copies are found in two binding variants, with the first issue binding generally preferred. The Lady Is Cold was White's first commercially published book, following only the rare in-house New Yorker promotional booklet Less Than Nothing; or, The Life and Times of Sterling Finny. Published under the initials E.B.W., the collection gathered White's early verse from the period when he was establishing himself as a writer at The New Yorker, decades before the publication of Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, and The Elements of Style. The first edition, first printing of The Lady Is Cold: Poems by E.B.W. by E.B. White. (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Binding "B", featuring a blue and silver city skyline repeating within grids across boards, is generally agreed to be the less common of the two bindings, and was issued in a run of only 1392 copies. Previous owner's bookplate -- graphic of what appears to be the Golden Gate Bridge… -- to front pastedown. Following White's "Less Than Nothing, or The Life and Times of Sterling Finney", a solely in-house New Yorker publication issued in 1927 "to send to agents and customers as a good-will offering,", "The Lady is Cold" was published at age 30. Stated First Edition. pp. [2], xii, 95, [2]. Rubbing and nudging to corners.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good-. First Edition. Octavo, 95pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, fresh and bright, with some very minor rubbing to the fragile corners; near fine. In the extremely scarce dust jacket, price-clipped, which has several tape and small non-archival paper repairs to the ve…rso, and a sizeable chip at the base; overall good at best. Despite the notable flaws, an outwardly pleasing copy of White's second book--a poetry collection--very difficult to obtain in its stylized Art Deco dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. Dust Jacket Condition: fair. First Edition. Octavo, 95pp., illustrated. Second issue binding, with repeated pattern of a stylized skyscraper (seemingly less common than the first issue). About very good in the publisher's fragile paper-covered baords with black cloth spine. Corners worn, inner h…inges starting, and a partial split at the bottom of the front outer joint, and a very thin tidemark along the top edge of the first several leaves. In the rare dust jacket, presenting nicely in an archival jacket protector, but in two pieces, with some small chips at the extremities, thus in fair condition. Despite all defects, an exceptional association copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by White in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper to playwright, Algonquin Round Table member, and New Yorker contributor Marc Connelly: "For Marc Connelly, (the bully) from Andy White." E. B. White was Andy to his friends, and no doubt the cheeky, brief inscription was something of an inside joke between friends. Connelly got his start in journalism in Pittsburgh, but made it to New York, where he joined Harold Ross's new magazine, The New Yorker, in its very early years. In 1926, White joined the staff, and Connelly later wrote, "It was White who brought the steel and the music to the magazine." Connelly is best remembered today for being a member of the Round Table, and for his ambitious play, "The Green Pastures." The play, based on Roark Bradford's short story collection "Ol' Man Adam," was the first Broadway production to feature an all-Black cast. "The Lady is Cold" was White's first regularly published book, and collects some poems which had been published in The New Yorker, alongside some original works. A wonderful copy, which brings together two writers who developed their reputations in the early years of Harold Ross's editorship of The New Yorker.
