Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A great journalist takes readers places they've never been before, while a great writer makes them feel as though they're really there. Brown qualifies on both counts, as evidenced by her groundbreaking foray into the lives of the women of Heera Mandi, a red-l…ight district in Lahore, Pakistan. An academic researcher who has studied prostitution globally, Brown spent four years gathering materials for THE DANCING GIRLS OF LAHORE , and informs readers that this red-light district dates from ancient times, when courtesans would vie for the hearts of sultans and emperors. The older women like to remember themselves as artists. "Their skills had nothing to do with sex -- except, perhaps, sometimes." But today Heera Mandi is a run-down, congested, dangerous ghetto where women are born into the profession with scant hope of escaping. Brown's depiction of these "dancing girls" is as gripping as it is devastating. She describes the influence of the local drug trade and the filthy conditions in which the women live, and readers sense her struggle with her role as an observer when she desperately wishes to save one young girl from a dismal future. THE DANCING GIRLS OF LAHORE is essential reading, because it forces its readers to see that regardless of how much women have achieved in many parts of the world, there's still much progress to be made. Fine, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. {Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} N38.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. With beautiful understatement, Louise Brown turns a novelist's eye on a true story that beggars the imagination - the lives of the 'dancing girls' of Lahore, Parkistan. THE DANCING GIRLS OF LAHORE inhabit the Diamond Market in the shadow of a great mosque.… The twenty-first century goes on outside the walls of this ancient quarter but scarcely registers within. Though their trade can be described with accuracy as prostitution, the dancing girls have an illustrious history: Beloved by emperors and nawabs, their sophisticated art encompassed the best of Mughal culture. The modern-day Bollywood aesthetic, with its love of gaudy spectacle, music, and dance, is their distant legacy. But the life of the pampered courtesan is not the one now being lived by Maha and her three girls. What they do is forbidden by Islam, though tolerated; but they are gandi, "unclean," and Maha's daughters, like her, are born into the business and will not leave it.Sociologist Louise Brown spent four years in the most intimate study of the family life of a Lahori dancing girl. With beautiful understatement, she turns a novelist's eye on a true story that beggars the imagination. Maha, a classically trained dancer of exquisite grace, had her virginity sold to a powerful Arab sheikh at the age of twelve; when her own daughter Nena comes of age and Maha cannot bring in the money he once did, she faces a terrible decision as the agents of the sheikh come calling once more. As new, unread, first edition, first printing, in as new, mylar-protected dust jacket. {Not remainder-marked or price0clipped} NF95.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Introduction. 1. The railway strike of 1920: general miller and the army of the poor. 2. The Mughalpura movement s quest for autonomy in the inter-war years. 3. Swaraj or Mistri Raj ? Labour relations and labour s politics in the railway workshops of Lahore (c.1919 47). 4. Fictio…n, biographies and the forgotten testimonies of reformists . 5. The Meerut Conspiracy Case and the Royal Commission on Labour in India: reformism , communism and the loss of the workers dream. 6. The Mughalpura Workers movement under communist hegemony. 7. The Abyss of Isolation: marginalisation and repression of Mughalpura s workers. Epilogue. Appendix. Bibliography. Index. Late-colonial Lahore witnessed the rise of organised workers politics with the unionisation of native Indian workers at the Mughalpura railway workshops in 1920. Various ideological tendencies-the Owenist, Labourite and Communist traditions-began to come together while power struggles gradually led to rifts within the trade-union. Revolution in Reform: Trade-Unionism in Lahore, c. 1920-70 explores these previously unrecognised ambivalences. Ahmad Azhar questions previous research that have traditionally considered labour politics of inter-war Punjab as mere preludes to Partition. He studies crucial moments: the railway strike of 1920; Mughalpura s quest for autonomy in the inter-war years; the relation of labour politics with Swaraj and the Indian National Congress (1919-47); and the Meerut Conspiracy Case and the Royal Commission on Labour in India. The author also reconstructs events of the time from the narrative of Mirza Ibrahim, a key worker militant leader, to analyse the repression faced by workers in the Mughalpura movement under communist hegemony. Through hitherto unused ego documents (mostly in the vernacular) of leaders such as J. B. Miller, M. A. Khan, Bashir Ahmed Bakhtiar and Saif-ur-Rehman, the author brings alive the conflicting aspects of trade-union leadership in a politically charged period in the history of inter-war Punjab and post-Partition Pakistan.
