Un volume in-12°, demi-reliure cuir bleu, dos à 4 nerfs avec fleurons et auteur/titre dans un des caissons. L'ouvrage compte 320 pages. Il est le frère du dessinateur caricaturiste réputé Henri-Gabriel IBELS (Assiette au Beurre , Père Peinard etc .) et lui-même a co-fondé La Revue Anarchiste en 1893. Ces indications péri-biograp…hiques sont importantes car elles indiquent assez dans quel esprit André IBELS a écrit ce livre -LA TRAITE DES CHANTEUSES- à la fois indigné et dénonciateur.Avec un grand nombre d'exemples et la reproduction de nombreux documents publiés, affichés ou simplement écrits, IBELS montre que la plupart des chanteuses de son temps -mais aussi sans doute des temps antérieurs- sont conduites presque obligatoirement à se prostituer. La question doit être évidemment replacée dans son contexte. A l'époque en question (fin 19ème et début 20ème), l'évolution des moeurs avait sans doute conduit beaucoup de femmes à quitter leur milieu pour tenter de vivre de façon indépendante. La chanson était sans doute considérée par elles comme un des rares moyens d' "arriver" ou tout simplement de subsister. D'un autre côté, les Directeurs de revue, les agents de spectacles, les patrons de Café concert, de Beuglants ou de "Bouibouis" etc. ont du voir assez vite l'intérêt que pouvait présenter pour eux cet afflux de candidates souvent peu exigeantes à la fonction de chanteuse (il n'y avait encore aucun moyen technique pour amplifier la voix ou la reproduire, il y avait donc de gros besoins ) Toujours est-iI qu'à la lecture du texte d'IBELS, on comprend bien qu'il était facile pour les patrons de spectacles et de cafés de tous ordres d'attirer à moindre frais un grand nombre de ces chanteuses, en échange de contrats plus ou moins flous ou même d'un simple hébergement On comprend bien aussin implicitement, que ces chanteuses devaient souvent se résoudre à gagner leur vie par d'autres moyens que le chant Cette situation scandaleuse, indigne, devait finir par émouvoir et révolter des hommes tels que IBELS si prompt à dénoncer tous les abus dans la presse anarchiste. Nous reproduisons ici quelques lignes de la dédicace préliminaire du présent livre: une dédicace à l'intention d'Albert SARRAULT et Jules CAUSIT, deux collaborateurs de haut rang du Ministre de l'Intérieur (Georges CLEMENCEAU). André IBELS écrit en parlant des Chanteuses: "Elles comptent que vous rappellerez à Monsieur CLEMENCEAU, Ministre de l'intérieur, le DECRET qu'il leur a en quelque sorte promis: le DECRET qui les affranchira de la prostitution clandestine obligatoire. Vous aurez à coeur, je le sais, de prouver que vous êtes de ceux qui veillent à ce que l'on ne rende point la République haïssable à tous les républicains" Certes le statut de ces chanteuses évoluera par la suite, elles purent sans doute mieux se défendre, une réglementation plus précise fut imposée dans la formulation de leurs contrats et la Société des Éditeurs, Auteurs et Compositeurs de musiques fut invitée à mieux surveiller leur profession. MAis si les choses ont fini par aller mieux -ou un peu mieux, dit-on-, c'est en partie dû à un livre comme celui-d'André IBELS. Nptre exemplaire présente quelques signes d'âge (notamment un papier jaunissant) mai est resté très compact dans sa reliure. ETAT TRES SATISFAISANT.
