The book has been signed by both Tolli and Ari Trausti on the half-title page, dated Iceland 2004. Text in English, French and German. The book is illustrated in color with Tolli's paintings of Mt. Skessuhorn, a famous mountain in Iceland. 13" high X 9" wide, 175 pages. The opaque printed vellum jacket has several tears to the edges and a small drawing in pencil next to Tolli's printed name. Unbound. Condition: Very Good. A collection of New Hampshire landscape photographs from the 1920s by C.E. Palmer and G.A. Christie, consisting of loose photos, mounted photos, and a handmade photo album. Also included are art pieces and broadsides featuring calligraphy and watercolor paintings by C.E. Palmer, as well as a handmade New Year's card with calligraphy and a watercolor painting by Palmer and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Christie. The one broadside consisting of just calligraphy is torn and soiled, and one photo has a small tear at the bottom left corner, otherwise the collection has been well preserved, overall very good or better. Though we cannot find any solid biographical information on either C.E. Palmer or G.A. Christie, we were able to find an article that Palmer wrote for the periodical *Photo-Era*, primarily illustrated with photos present in this collection. The article is titled "Following the Lens in the White Mountains" with Part One being published in July 1929 and Part Two in August 1929. Of the 15 photos published across the two parts, 11 are present here including the only photo in the article credited to Christie (the rest being by Palmer). Two of the photos featured in the article, and present here, show a man who we believe may be Christie, though he is not named in the descriptions. Both Palmer and Christie had a keen eye for photography, capturing impressive views of rushing falls, mountain views, and shimmering lakes. One photo even shows the famous Mt. Washington Hotel, which, despite its impressive size, is made to look small by the grandeur of its surroundings. The photos are hauntingly beautiful and many bear provocative titles such as "Arena of the Winds," "In the Halls of Giants," and "A Symphony in Hills." The provided descriptions often note both the physical location of where the photo was taken as well as what the photo is of, for instance, "Mt. Washington and Northern Peaks from Carter Dome" some give additional detail, "Hayes Farm not summer but Sept. 30, 1927, 90 degrees in shade." And the article provides even more insight, ".known locally as Green Hill and mentioned in the A.M.C. (Appalachian Mountain Club) guidebooks as Haye's Farm. The farm, now abandoned, is about one and one-half hours' leisurely walk up a fairly steep farm road through spreading pastures from Jackson Village." In addition to the wonderful photographs, the collection contains beautiful calligraphy and watercolor paintings by Palmer. The New Year's card features an anachronistically psychedelic script which reads, "May Your Ship Come In This Year," opening the card reveals a lovely watercolor painting of a ship on the water, its many sails creating a bold figure against the soft, pastel sky. The photo album, titled *Studies in Sticks and Stones, 1927* by Palmer and dedicated to Christie, has a handmade title page with calligraphy and a small watercolor depicting mountains and sky, after the dedication page there is an additional watercolor of a mountain range at dusk titled "Twilight." Lastly, there are three broadsides, each measuring approximately 14" x 11", which appear to have been intended to serve as the title pages or front covers of additional albums. One is titled "Waumbec Marches" dated 1928 with a watercolor painting of a mountain, one is titled "The Second Waumbec March" dated 1929 with a small watercolor painting of a mountain, and the third is also title "The Second Waumbec March" dated 1929 but consists of only calligraphy. Altogether there are 56 photographs and seven art pieces / broadsides (five of calligraphy and watercolor, and two of only calligraphy, one being the front cover of the album). Of the 56 photos there are 16 loose photos by G.A. Christie, each measuring approximately 7¾" x 4¾", all but one with a handwritten caption describing the location on the back, one signed by Christie; the handmade photo album containing 16 photographs by Palmer, some measuring 9" x 7" others 6½" x 5" all with titles written underneath, with a page of handwritten descriptions laid in; and 21 mounted photographs by Palmer each measuring approximately 9¼" x 7" mounted on thick paper measuring 14" x 11" most with titles, only two of which include a location. A lovely record of the New Hampshire landscape in the 1920s.
