no binding. Condition: very good. This finely executed photogravure titled SHERE is an original etching by Percy Robertson, R.P.E. (Royal Society of Painter-Etchers), published in the 1892 edition of The Magazine of Art by Cassell & Company, Ltd, with offices in London, Paris, and Melbourne. The image depicts the picturesque village of Shere, nestled in the Guildford district of Surrey, England, celebrated for its quintessential rural charm and historic architecture. The scene presents a tranquil view of the village in late autumn or early winter, with bare trees arching above a winding stream in the foreground and a woman standing solitary in a frost-kissed meadow. In the mid-ground, a narrow footbridge leads to a cluster of figures gathered near a church, its steeply pitched spire rising prominently among the trees. A horse-drawn cart and villagers along the path imbue the composition with pastoral life and gentle movement. The church, likely St. James' Church, anchors the spiritual and architectural heart of the village. The surrounding cottages, thick foliage, and soft tonal gradations enhance the idyllic atmosphere, showcasing Robertson's sensitivity to both place and season. At lower left, the print is signed "Percy Robertson R.P.E.", and the label affixed at bottom center reads: SHERE (Original Etching by Percy Robertson, R.P.E.), confirming its status as a signed original etching rendered in photogravure, a medium prized for its ability to capture fine detail and subtle shading in printmaking during the Victorian era. [See BM description]. Hieronymus Hopfer (c1500-1550), German etcher, son of Daniel Hopfer and brother of Lambert Hopfer, worked with his father to recreate prints by etching. Daniel Hopfer is believed to be the first to utilizing etching in printmaking. Little is known of Hieronymus, most of his works were published copies after Germans such as Durer and Cranach, and Italians as Barberi and Campagnola. Marcantonio Raimondi (c1480-1534), Italian engraver, began engraving copies of Durer in Venice c1506-08, for which Durer famously brought legal charges against him. After 1506, Raimondi primarily engraed designs of Raphael and his circle. Citations: BM: 1845, 0809.1460. Hollstein 46.11. Bartsch VIII. 517.41 Bartsch XIV.272.356.

Condition: Very good condition. Signed etching in the lower margin and in the plate, by the master print maker, Scottish artist David Young Cameron. The dramatic landscape is likely in Scotland, depicting massive dark rock formations set in a broad valley. Perhaps the Firth of Lorne, as a distant rock formation resembles this famous estuary. Cameron was highly skilled at capturing stillness and mood, the atmosphere of a specific place. Cameron's (1865- 1945) subjects included landscapes and architectural studies, of which he produced a number of popular 'sets' ("The Clyde Set", "The North Holland Set" and "The North Italian Set"). He produced relatively small editions of his prints, highly sought after by collectors. In 1929 one such work sold for the record breaking sum of L640, equivalent to around £36,000 today. 14 x 9 1/2", paper 15 x 11". Slight even toning, with residue of masking tape at verso of top edge.
