This compilation, based on the notes of John Pye, an esteemed engraver, offers a detailed analysis of Turner's collection of prints, intended to educate both artists and connoisseurs in the principles of landscape painting. Pyeâs observations provide insights into Turnerâs techniques, thematic choices, and the innovative use of light and shade that characterizes the Liber Studiorum. The book also discusses the broader context of Turnerâs work, including his influence on the Romantic movement and his enduring legacy in British art. no binding. Condition: very good. This finely executed photogravure titled SHERE is an original etching by Percy Robertson, R.P.E. (Royal Society of Painter-Etchers), published in the 1892 edition of The Magazine of Art by Cassell & Company, Ltd, with offices in London, Paris, and Melbourne. The image depicts the picturesque vil…lage of Shere, nestled in the Guildford district of Surrey, England, celebrated for its quintessential rural charm and historic architecture. The scene presents a tranquil view of the village in late autumn or early winter, with bare trees arching above a winding stream in the foreground and a woman standing solitary in a frost-kissed meadow. In the mid-ground, a narrow footbridge leads to a cluster of figures gathered near a church, its steeply pitched spire rising prominently among the trees. A horse-drawn cart and villagers along the path imbue the composition with pastoral life and gentle movement. The church, likely St. James' Church, anchors the spiritual and architectural heart of the village. The surrounding cottages, thick foliage, and soft tonal gradations enhance the idyllic atmosphere, showcasing Robertson's sensitivity to both place and season. At lower left, the print is signed "Percy Robertson R.P.E.", and the label affixed at bottom center reads: SHERE (Original Etching by Percy Robertson, R.P.E.), confirming its status as a signed original etching rendered in photogravure, a medium prized for its ability to capture fine detail and subtle shading in printmaking during the Victorian era. IMAGE SIZE: approx 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 Inches CONDITION: Cropped from original,As scanned. Heavy card stock. Signature in print .The image has beautiful depth and detail. Blank on Reverse side. This beautiful rare item would look great matted and framed. An art supply store can provide you with a selection of frames for old art treasures. This is a GENUINE Antique PRINT It is NOT a modern reproduction, ie. a laser scan, photocopy etc. It is the original from the Antique publication. This print was published on the date mentioned, or circa of the date mentioned at the top of the page. The term "print" is referred to an image on a piece of paper. The print I have for sale, like many antique maps prints that you see online, originate from an antique book or atlas publication. The publication may not always be known. If you have any questions, emails are welcome.
