Condition: Near Fine. N.d., late 18th century. The box measures 15 by 8 cm, and it is not quite 3 cm thick. The top lid is covered with the evocative painting, ultra-Romanic in its depiction of the sky and gnarled trees. There is in the foreground the tiny representation of a farmer or shepherd, and two other indistinct figures, a man and a boy, are walking on what would seem a winding country lane. The rear and spine have a dappled marbling effect, suggestive of a pebbled cloth or leather, and the edges are painted a Pompeien red or burnt orange. The top and bottom overhang the edge as would the cover of a book, and there can be no doubt that the maker of the box was deliberately emulating a book shape. The top lid opens to a small storage space.
