Illustrated with a frontispiece and three plates. Collated complete. The author's first full-length novel, set in a Lancashire village dominated by the pit. As a pit girl Joan Lowrie has endured hardship for as long as she can remember, but her pride and determination to rise above her lot stands her apart from the other girls. Written by Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett, a British-American novelist and playwright best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Illustrated by Alfred Fredericks, an American visual artist and illustrator. Previously held in the library of Charles Smith Landers, an American manufacturer with connections to Landers, Frary & Clark Company manufacturers of cutlery. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with minor loss to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine. A sticker to the tail of the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Previous owner's bookplates to the front pastedown with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Good. book.
