Bruccoli's first book-length study of Fitzgerald's unfinished novel The Last Tycoon. Snugly bound and fresh in full black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, with the publisher's orange top stain bold and uniform. Pictorial dust jacket is sharp-edged and bright with just a trace of shelf evidence along the edges. Inscribed on the front endpage in Bruccoli's typically deadpan style: "The Vince Balitas Copy" signed and dated 12 October 1978. Vincent Balitas (19372005) , a Pottsville native known for his Pynchon and Plath scholarship and as a reviewer of contemporary poetry, had that same year begun publishing the John O'Hara Journal, a small magazine that combined attention to O'Hara with new poetry and short fiction. An unusual and pointed association linking Bruccoli's Fitzgerald/O'Hara work with Balitas' newly launched journal. NF/NF. ; Signed by Author.

Enchanted by one another, they begin a passionate but hopeless love affair, starting with a fast-moving seduction as slick as a scene from one of Stahr's pictures. The romance unfolds, frame by frame, watched by Cecilia, a thoroughly modern girl who has taken her lessons in sentiment and cynicism from all the movies she has seen. Her buoyant humour and satirical eye perfectly complement Fitzgerald's panorama of Hollywood at its most lavish and bewitching. F.
