"Ruskin, in one of his friendly lecture-talks on art, with the sympathetic spiritual perception and originality of thought which characterize his unique genius, says: "Now, what we especially need for educational purposes, is to know, not the anatomy of plants, but their biography - how and where they live and die, their tempers, benevolences, distresses and virtues." And could we find for such a flower biography a subject more entracing, so seductive, almost eerie, so plaintively sturdy, so instilled with romance, with patriotism and with pathos, as the Highland Heather?" (from the Preface).

Library stamps in several places of the Somersetshire Archaelogical and Natural History Society, at Taunton Castle. Atherstone (1782-1872) was himself a poet, author of The Fall of Nineveh (1828-30) and other long poems. This collection is largely light-hearted in tone, dealing with the social scene in the fashionable spa town of Cheltenham, but towards the end there are some more serious poems, entitled 'Songs of Palestine', which one assumes the author had not in fact visited. Copac locates just one copy of this book, at the British Library.
