h/c + d/j, large format,22cm x 28.5cm,624pp. Frontis. b/w plate drawing ' Achieving of the Sangreal'. Fully illustrated with 19 b/w plates, and a vast number of detailed drawings, ornamental borders, illuminated initials and smaller decorations. Has a stain to top ledge were a leather book mark was, some d/j edge scuffs, some light d/j edge wear, quite decent. These illustrations undoubtedly established Beardsley's reputation, accounting for a large proportion of his total output, for he died tragically young at the age of 25. This book is one of the early masterpieces of English prose writing, and celebrates the chivalry and romance associated with medieval times, and the court of King Arthur. The combination of classic literature and remarkable illustration make this a unique book that will appeal as much to the art-collector as to the book-lover.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Beardsley, Aubrey (illustrator). 1st Edition. Not until this, the third edition, was an effort made to collect the fullest body of those illustrations which Beardsley had originally intended to accompany the seminal text of Malory. Published in America by E. P. Dutton in 1927 in an edition limited to 1600 copies. Introduction by Professor John Rhys and a note on Beardsley by Aymer Vallance. Beardsley devoted no small degree of himself - and his extraordinary talent - to the illustration of Le Morte D'Arthur. Lacking the original dust jacket, this is a very good copy marred only by abrasion to the cloth at the top and bottom foredges of the front board and just a slight bit of rubbing to the lower corner of the front board decoration. Bound in cloth with beveled edges, spine and front panel decorated and lettered in gold - a beautiful and visually appealing example of what happens when the proper literary work is illustrated by the proper artist - and then presented with appropriate care by the right publisher. The book bears the original woodcuts of J.J. Lankes on bookplates of the owners ( husband and wife ) Harry O'Neil and Margaret MvcPherson. A very attractive copy.
