Il 26 novembre 1974, June Leaf l…asciò la sua prima annotazione scritta a mano, tipo diario, nel suo nuovo sketchbook (riprodotto qui da Steidl), durante un difficile inverno trascorso nelle miniere di carbone di Mabou, in Nuova Scozia, con suo marito Robert Frank: "Di solito non mi piace scrivere perché sono più soddisfatta da un'azione". Nonostante ciò Leaf continua questa pratica in tutto il suo sketchbook, a volte usando una stretta combinazione di immagini esplorative e testo scarabocchiato, a volte mettendo in pausa l'atto di prendere appunti per alcune pagine mentre un'idea visiva veniva raffinata attraverso un disegno. Il libro è un piacere da maneggiare ed esaminare da vicino: ogni macchia, sbavatura, segno di grafite cancellato e segno di pressione nel quaderno di schizzi originale è stato catturato nel facsimile. Questa attenzione ai dettagli permette naturalmente di apprezzare in profondità la sensibilità lineare, la velocità, l'inventiva e la varietà di Leaf, rendendo questa pubblicazione un documento prezioso nella ricerca del lavoro di Leaf e, allo stesso modo, per studi più generali sul processo artistico.
