23.5x16 cm. Original gilt and blind-stamped leather, rubbed at joints and bottom edges. Internally fine. Overall very good condition. AEG. 224 pp., 11 chromolithographic plates by L. N. Rosenthal. A scarce gift book with early chromolithographs of birds as illustrations. The birds were painted by Mrs. C. W. Webber. The text contains essays and poetry, with contributors including J. J. Audubon, Emerson, Lowell, and Alexander Wilson. The book is undated, but AAS 458935 notes that Leavitt & Allen, the publisher, was at the 379 Broadway address shown between 1856 and 1860.
