Grace Paley (1922-2007), an author of both prose and poetry, has been called "a seminal American writer". She described herself as a "combative pacifist and a cooperative anarchist" and had always been active in anti-war and feminist causes; her poetry, more than her prose, often reflects her political feelings. The Poetry Foundation says of her poems that they "display the verve and innuendo that energize her fiction". Painter, engraver, illustrator, Lydis "owed her famed chiefly to her color prints and to her illustrations.
