Seine ersten Publikationen befassen sich mit der Theorie der hyperelliptischen Integrale und Funktionen und mit ihrer invarianten-theoretischen Behandlung. Ab etwa 1900 beschäftigte er sich fast ausschließlich mit dem Ausbau der von Weierstraß und David Hilbert entwickelten Methode der Variationsrechnung" (NDB II, 438).

He extended and applied existence theorems for implicit functions and for solutions to differential equations.
