Das war satirisch zugespitzt, denn bis ins Schweizer Exil während des NS-Regime unterhielt Ledebour politische Verbindungen. Begonnen hatte der hier Porträtierte als Links- und Sozialliberaler mit Affinität zum en…glischen Parlamentarismus und den Gewerkschaften. Als Sozialdemokrat in der Aufstiegsperiode nach dem Sozialistengesetz rückte Ledebour rasch ins Zentrum der Partei: als Redner nicht nur in deren Bildungswesen und Autor im Zentralorgan 'Vorwärts'. Nach dem Tod des SPD-Patriarchen Wilhelm Liebknecht 1900 übernahm Ledebour dessen Berliner Reichstagswahlkreis und gewann ihn stets, mit Rekordergebnissen bis über 80 %. Fast wäre er und nicht Philipp Scheidemann nach dem Tod August Bebels 1913 einer der beiden Vorsitzenden der SPD-Reichstagsfraktion geworden. Als USPD-Mitglied seit 1917 verlor Ledebour an Einfluss, trotz Höhepunkts öffentlicher Wirkung in der Revolution 1918/19, zumal er 1920 die Vereinigung mit der KPD ebenso ablehnte wie 1922 jene mit der SPD.
