Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Marbled paper boards measuring 9.25" x 7.5". 50pp. Paper name label pasted down on the front cover. Bookseller label of "Librairie De J.T. Brousseau, No. 9, Rue Buade Vis-A-Vis Le Presbytere Quebec" located in the upper left corner front pastedown. A ledger kept by a young woman in Quebec in 1856. The ledger opens with a hand illustrated title page reading, "Book Keeping by Single Entry by Charlotte L. Lloyd Ursuline Convent Quebec 1856." Of the 50 lined pages of the notebook, Lloyd uses 46 to record contents, presumably for a class at the convent. Headings for the ledger includes, "Day-Book" entries; "Index to the Ledger," with names and locations; "State of my Affairs"; "A Housekeepers Account"; "Invoices"; "Bill of Parcels"; "Promissory Notes"; "Letters de Changes"; "Drafts"; "Receipts"; "Workmen's Account"; "Rule of Three"; "Practice"; "Interest"; and "Discount". Lloyd uses illustrated calligraphy throughout the ledger for these titles. The final pages feature equations by Lloyd answering questions about the ledger information. According to their website, the Ursuline Convent for Women in Quebec is the oldest learning institution for women in North America founded by a missionary group of Ursuline nuns in 1639 under the leadership of Mother Marie of the Incarnation. The Ursuline Monastery of Quebec City was designated a National History Site of Canada in 1972. A beautifully hand illustrated ledger compiled by a female student at the Ursuline Convent in the 1850s.
