Conceived as a real 'solo', the exhibition is the first in an Italian museum dedicated to investigating the deep relationships that Leoncillo had with the ancient, archaic and clas-sical, as well as with the great masters of the Renaissance and Baroque, throughout its thirty years of activity (1938-1968).The collaboration with other Florentine museums and institutions is consolidated: one of Leoncillo's most famous works is, in fact, exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Florence to underline the continuity of a fruitful dialogue between contempo-rary art and the past, in this case with the artistic expression of the ancient Etruscans, whose creations impressed Leoncillo with their profound understanding of human feelings suspended between love and death, life and afterlife.The exhibited works, about thirty sculptures, panels and papers, highlight the continuity of gaze that runs through the entire work, beyond the more traditional classifications based solely on stylistic criteria: in fact, from the hybrid and monstrous beings of 1939 until the last and celebrated decade in which the experience of matter triumphs, through the neocubist season (1946-1955). La singolare vicenda di un protagonista della scultura italiana come Leoncillo (1915-68) che ha attraversato i decenni centrali del Novecento, misurandosi con gli accadimenti e le trasformazioni di uno dei più drammatici periodi della storia. Frutto di un progetto avviato nel 2015 con il convegno nazionale omonimo svoltosi a Spoleto per i cento anni dalla nascita dello scultore, il volume raccoglie testimonianze, contributi critici e nuovi studi che restituiscono a tutto tondo la personalità di Leoncillo e rivelano la tensione e la stringente coerenza di tutta la sua produzione. Profondamente intrecciata al suo personale vissuto, la ricerca formale dell'artista si è dipanata in un dialogo serrato con i fatti ma anche con i grandi interrogativi dell'esistenza, trovando nella ceramica il materiale d'elezione. Leoncillo , pseudonimo di Leoncillo Leonardi (1915-68), fra il 1935 e il 1939 entra in contatto con gli artisti della Scuola romana e realizza, in chiave espressionistica, ceramiche colorate di soggetto mitologico. Dal 1939 al 1942 dirige a Umbertide una manifattura di ceramiche. Nel 1944 realizza "Madre romana uccisa dai tedeschi", considerata dalla critica il suo capolavoro, in cui il linguaggio espressionista è sviluppato nel senso di una scomposizione plastica dei volumi che già prelude al neocubismo del dopoguerra. Alla metà degli anni cinquanta abbandona la semplificazione cubista per volgersi a esperienze informali, pur conservando un'estrema attenzione per la materia usata e le sue proprietà espressive.
