Thompson said that early travels in Europe and the opportunity to work alongside other sculptors "opened my eyes as to what was possible sculpturally". Thompson won the Boise Scholarship in 1964, a Sainsbury Scholarship in 1965 and a North Eastern Arts Association Purchase Prize in 1966. He participated in the International Sculpture Symposiums in St Margarethen in 1964 and Portoroz, Yugoslavia, 1969. He was a visiting tutor in sculpture at Canterbury College of Art, 1965, becoming a full-time tutor and senior lecturer in sculpture at Canterbury, 1970 89. A unique opportunity to own this large 9" x 7" fully hand written and signed letter by Brigadier Peter Young apologising he had no photo to send the collector but has sent this in 1982 on his headed paper instead - you will never get a better autograph listing than a fully hand written item on the Brig…adier's very own headed paper - It has been mounted (adhered so cannot be removed) onto card for protection and whilst folded where posted (just twice) it is otherwise mint condition.Brigadier Peter Young, DSO, MC & Two Bars (28 July 1915 13 September 1988) was a British Army officer who, during the Second World War, served with distinction with the British Commandos. Subsequently, he commanded a regiment of the Arab Legion, then returned to England in staff appointments. Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, Young went to France with the battalion in late 1939, shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). The battalion formed part of the 10th Infantry Brigade, commanded by Brigadier Evelyn Barker, part of the 4th Infantry Division. Following the Battle of France in May 1940, the battalion was evacuated from Dunkirk in late May, during which Young was wounded. After he recovered from his wounds Young volunteered to join the Commandos and on being accepted joined 3 Commando in time to take part in the second commando operation of the warOperation Ambassadorin July 1940. Promoted to lieutenant in August 1940,[5] Young was to serve in the commandos for the rest of the war. Following Operation Ambassador and the subsequent operations, Operation Claymore and Operation Archery, Young was awarded the Military Cross.

Volume 1 is numbered 707 and is signed by the publisher, and as an affixed letter signed by J.M. Barrie within. Volumes 2 - 14 are numbered 491, and volumes 15 - 18 were printed a decade after the first 14 volumes (in 1940) and are numbered 172. Various volumes have uncut pages, and some are rough cut. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine…, October 2018. The present item is 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. Folded once for postage. Signed 'Peter Quennell'. He 'can't co-operate' with the questionnaire that Dosse has sent him. 'In the first place, I'm rather too busy just now; & filling it up wld require a good deal of thought. Secondly, I don't much like the idea of sniping at my fellow writers without explaining my criticisms - 'overpraised', 'unreadable', 'silliest' etc - at some length.' He ends by reminding Dosse that he owes him a cheque 'for my Boswell-Thrale review, which I hope will arrive before Christmas'.
