SIGNED by Suzanne Simon Dietz on title page above her printed name. A major prisoner of war camp was established during World War II on the Fort Niagara Military Reservation, an active duty U.S. Army post, north of the village of Youngstown, NY. The POW camp at Fort Niagara operated from 1944 through 1945, and was the administrative and command center for 14 other branch POW camps that housed Axis prisoners who worked on regional farms and in food processing facilities. The book containes transcribed detailed official U.S. Army reports and correspondence about the makeup of the POW population and labor statistics, and documenting compliance with the Geneva Conventions in force at the time. Also contained is official Red Cross inspection data. Further, the book contains personal letters written by former Fort Niagara POWs, sent to the family of the local farmer near the fort who employed them under contract with the U.S. Government. The letters discuss conditions in other POW camps after they left Niagara and upon their return to Europe, as well as pleas for humanitarian assistance to help survive the post war years in their war-torn home towns.
