Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st edition, 2023 of the revised and expanded edition of Tolkien's letters, edited by Tolkien's biographer, Humphrey Carpenter with the help of Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien. This expanded version restores more than 150 letters which were not included in the original 1st edition of 1981, due to the exigencies of size. Foreword by Humphrey Carpenter (taken from the 1st edition) in which he expresses hopes that an expanded version may be possible in the future. This is it - and it is a must for all serious Tolkien scholars. 708 pages (including detailed notes and Index) printed and bound on black boards with gold, gilt titles to the spine and vivid green end papers. In near-fine condition throughout excepting a faint line down the length of the spine (commensurate with the cut to the dust-jacket). With non-clipped dust-jacket which has a cut down the length of the spine (repaired with cellotape) and small creases to the top edge, as in the accompanying photographs - but otherwise deemed to be in overall VGC. Large 8vo. [NB: A heavy book to post, but well within the 2kg limit for small parcel in the UK. International buyers will be asked for additional postage].

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original brown-coloured cloth with coloured top edge, gilt titles to backstrip, pp. 463. VG condition, nice and square, pushed at the spine tips, the top edge has a lost a little of its colouring. Dustjacket is creased at the spine tips, rubbed at the upper corners with minor loss of the laminate. Tanned at the flaps and while not clipped, lacks printed price at the front flap. A bit shelf-worn along the edges in places and the rear panel is almost two-tone, i.e. brown and very dark brown which is presumably a production fault. Not Fine by any means but a presentable copy, nonetheless.
