Champollion démontre les erreurs de Seyffarth et Spohn qui selon lui "s'abandonnent à des illusions que l'étude des monumens originaux pouvait seule dissiper". Il compare leur système de l'interprétation des hiéroglyphes à celui, complètement arbitraire et obsolète d'Athanase Kircher. On sait pourtant que toute sa vie Seyffarth restera persuadé que ses travaux étaient les seuls à permettre une traduction de l'égyptien.
