First Edition Signed
Oblong folio. 13.4 x 10.2 in. [21 leaves (unpaginated)]. Title printed on tissue in gilt. With 20 tipped-in black & white photo plates, some signed in corner of negative by photographer. Embossed red softcovers, blue & green decorative lettering on front cover, silk thread sewn as issued (slight sunning to spine), still NF copy. First edition (issue with 20 plates) of this scarce souvenir recording the Agricultural, Oriental, European, Forestry, and Government buildings at the Exposition, along with interior shots, and images of the grounds. Many of the photographs in this piece were taken and signed by Herbert A. Hale (1863-1935), noted landscape photographer, whose studio operated in Portland from around 1890 until the end of the 1920s, and for three years was partnered with Benjamin Gifford on Third between Alder & Morrison. Hale's images include those of Mt. Hood, Portland Harbor with sternwheelers and four-master logging ships competing on the River, Willamette Falls, and Cape Horn on the Columbia River Gorge. Also featured are at least two unidentified images by Fred Shogren of the Forestry Building. This 21 ff. version is quite scarce, as the 17 ff. appear to have survived in far greater numbers.
