Curioso libretto devozionale che tenta di aggiornare il bagaglio valoriale cattolico alle istanze e tematiche attuali. «[.] i soggetti narrativi modulano in monologhi sostenuti e appassionati la problematicità della propria condizione femminile, commisurandosi con i casi di coscienza sollevati da circostanze pubbliche, domestiche o interiori [.]. Eppure il 'Libro di preghiere muliebri', se ospita le espressioni più convenzionali circa l'eterno femminino, propone anche figure di donne alle prese con quesiti politici, o comunque di carattere collettivo, che la mentalità antifemminista prevalente escluderebbe certo da ogni ordine di preoccupazioni donnesche» (Cenati, «Torniamo a bomba: i ghiribizzi narrativi di Vittorio Imbriani», pp. 30 e 60). PAOLO SARPI AND THE PLOT TO MAKE ITALY ANGLICAN. 12mo. [15.5 x 9.2 cm]. (72), 312 pp, 289-550 pp, [1 integral blank], 24 pp. Blank leaf bound here in sequence rather than at the end, as in the ESTC collation. Bound in contemporary English calf with gilt title and ornaments on spine. Binding and joints very rubbed and worn, but holding perfectly; contents well-preserved. Leaves O5 and O6 with short closed tears in lower margins due to awkward printing/binding, but all text legible. Ownership inscriptions on flyleaf and title-page of Anne Orde-Powlett, "the gift of her aunt, 1802". Scarce first edition of the first printed translation of the Book of Common Prayer into Italian, composed under complex circumstances, as "part of an English propaganda plan to instigate a schism in the Church of Venice, at a time of conflict between the court of Rome and the Venetian Republic" (Villani). William Bedell had served as the chaplain to James I's ambassador to Venice and completed the present translation with the help of the notorious Italian crypto-Protestants Fulgenzio Micanzio and Paolo Sarpi. According to Villani, no copies of the Bedell manuscript have survived, and its first appearance in print under the stewardship of navy chaplain Edward Brown was the present 1685 publication. "This was the first edition printed in Italian of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. An Italian Protestant Church in England no longer existed when this translation was published and, moreover, this liturgical text was apparently not meant for use in worship. Furthermore, the same Italian Protestant Church in London, founded in 1550 and dissolved probably around 1663, had never adopted Anglican worship, and both from the institutional and liturgical points of view, had always been a Calvinist Church. It is therefore interesting to try to understand who was behind this translation and what the reasons that led to its publication were." (Villani). While the general preface bears the signature of Bedell, Brown signs the "Avvertimento al lettore" from London, dated the 29 June 1685. From 1676-1680, Brown had served in Constantinople as chaplain to the English Ambassador at the Ottoman court, Sir John Finch (formerly an English resident of Tuscany); the present work is his only known activity in print following his return to London. Certain sections most obviously the prayers for the martyred Charles I must have been added by Brown himself to Bedell's original manuscript. The last copy in auction records that we have traced was the Macclesfield (2006).
