    30 mounted photos, 13 x 10, rough cloth, unpag, covers darkened and worn, extremities bumped and badly fraying, spine bottom rough, front cover and first few pp water stained, contents toned but still a striking volume. The black and white photos show the atrocities of Lidice by the Nazis, and the speech of President E. Benes on June 10th, 1945; the text of his speech is included in this book. The book is inscribed "To Joseph E. Davies, the striver, is this volume humbly dedicated" and signed by V.S. Nurbacy, "ambassador." Davies was the second US Ambassador to the Soviet Union, and head of FDR's War Relief Board; he was also named Ambassador at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, among many other positions. Scarce. Significant association copy.

    GERHARD RÜHM (illustrator). Dieses Set enthält den unvollständigen Ausstellungskatalog sowie zwei Collagen von Gerhard Rühm, von denen eine auf der Rückseite signiert ist. ?Nachstehend die Beschreibung, die mir die Galerie Block zugesandt hat, wofür ich mich bedanke. Montage, Karton, Zeitungspapier 15 x 21 cm 400 Unikaten (Sie sind bis auf wenige Exemplare unsigniert). "Der Beitrag von Gerhard Rühm für die Ausstellung Hommage à Lidice 1967 in der Galerie René Block ist eine kleine Montagearbeit. Wie in der Schablone für Zeitungsleser (EB12) der Name des Künstlers, so wurde für diese Arbeit ein Ausrufezeichen von 11cm Höhe und 1cm Breite aus schwarzem Karton gestanzt. Die beiden ausgestanzten Teile wurden vom Künstler neben die Öffnungen auf den Karton geklebt. Hinter die Öffnungen ist ein einer Zeitung entnommenes Bild angebracht. So entstanden drei Bildebenen. Als Bildmotive wählte Rühm einen Ausschnitt einer Reportagefotografie aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Es war 1967 nicht möglich, diese subtile Arbeit so zu fotografieren, dass der sowohl poetische wie auch anklagende Charakter der Montage im Katalogdruck wiedergegeben werden konnte. So wurde entschieden, das Werk zu multiplizieren und jedem Katalog als Originalarbeit beizulegen. Aufgrund der verschiedenen Zeitungsbilder entstanden 400 Unikate. Sie sind bis auf wenige Exemplare unsigniert.".
