Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Revised (= expurgated) edition of book published the prior year. 4-1/2" x 7-1/8", 248pp incl. prelims. Printed on acidic paper and bound in signatures in calf boards. Original spine is lost, and replaced in the course of a book repair some time in the middle of the 20th century with a strip of heavy black library tape over which is pasted a white title label. Heavy edge, corner wear to original boards. Binding is splitting both front and back, and boards remain attached mostly via the tape. Half title page is completely lost, and the front paste down is taped directly to the title page with a 1" strip of fabric tape. The pages are heavily tanned, with edge and corner wear and staining. The title page is particularly distressed. The fore margin is completely worn away, and the last few letters in each line of the extended title are illegible. One piece of text rendered unfortunately obscure is the publication date line, which appears to state "MDCCXCIV", though this is not certain. The tape strip has covered a few characters at the left edge of the title block, though these words can still be made out in their entirety. There is a 1/4" hole (which may be a cinder / burn hole) lower down on the page, fortunately in one of the few blank spaces. This edition precedes the main text with a two-page "To the Reader", which begins: "The proprietors of this edition beg leave to premise to the public, that they have taken the liberty of omitting the parallel which has been carried on in the former editions of this work, between Mr Carew and Tom Jones . .", and the main text has been reset. The pages are unmarked.

Leather. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). An early edition of this sensational biography o the life of the 'King of Beggars', Bampfylde-Moore Carew. ESTC citation number N19152.A biography on Bampfylde Moore Carew, who apparently wrote this himself during a passage to America, though it's more likely that Carew supplied the facts to Robert Goadby, who then wrote it.Carew here provides a fantastic tale of his life, and though he certainly travelled and was involved in minor crimes, many stories in this volume are too fantastical and literary to be true. Carew claimed to be the King of the Beggars, and is known for being a rogue, vagabond, and imposter. This biography was an instant bestseller and was reprinted many times over the next hundred years. In a full calf binding, rebacked with a cloth spine. Externally, boards and spine are rubbed, resulting in a little loss of leather to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm, front hinge amateurly repaired with cloth. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with the occasional spot. Tape to the gutter between the front endpaper and title page. Good. book.

The celebrated life of a colourful swindler and impostor which was first published in 1745 and reprinted numerous times. This is one of two editions printed for Buckland, Bathurst and Davies in 1793. The final 5 pages contain a notable 'cant' dictionary explaining popular terms and phrases such as 'tipping the velvet', 'beard splitter', 'hog grubber', 'nun gimmer' and 'woblety cropt'.Carew fell in with a band of romanies as a wayward young boy. 'After a year and a half Carew returned home for a time, but soon after resumed a career of swindling and imposture, which saw him deceive people to whom he had previously been well known. Eventually he embarked for Newfoundland, but stayed only a short time. On his return to England he passed as the mate of a vessel, and eloped with the daughter of a respectable apothecary from Newcastle upon Tyne, whom he later married.Carew soon returned to the nomadic life, and when Clause Patch, a Gypsy king or chief, died Carew was elected his successor. He was convicted of being an idle vagrant, and sentenced to be transported to Maryland. On his arrival he attempted to escape, but was captured and made to wear a heavy iron collar; he escaped again, and encountered some Native Americans, who removed his shackles. On departure he travelled to Pennsylvania. He was then said to have swum the Delaware River, after which he adopted the guise of a Quaker, and made his way to Philadelphia, then to New York, and finally to Boston, where he embarked for England. He escaped impressment on board a man-of-war by pricking his hands and face, and rubbing in bay salt and gunpowder, so as to simulate smallpox' (John Ashton, rev. Heather Shore in Oxford DNB).This biography is variously attributed to Carew himself, to Robert Goadby and also to his wife, Mrs. Goadby. 12mo (150 × 90 mm), pp. 235, [5]. Two woodcut ornaments, typographical headpiece. Somewhat browned and spotted, paper flaw to lower forecorner of H4, slight loss, affecting just a few letters. Contemporary tree calf, gilt, red morocco label. Slightly rubbed. A very good copy.
