Crawford was the son of William Crawford who founded the brewing firm Beamish and Crawford alongside his friend William Beamish, and also established the Cork School of Art. William Horatio was famous for collecting fine books. The title continues: Translated from the original Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, by Charles Jarvis, esq. Now carefully revised and corrected: with a new translation of the Spanish poetry. To which is prefixed a copious and new life of Cervantes; including a critique on the Quixote; also a chronological plan of the work.

[4 blanks] + xxiv + 570 pp. [lacking final leaf, pp. 571/572], illus. w/ engraved frontis. portrait of author, engraved title pg., 5 additional engraved plates [may lack one plate]. Notably, this copy includes the engraved foldout map bound in between introductory material (p. xxiv) and the first page of text (p. 1), hand-colored in pale yellow, green, and red, quite nicely preserved, showing only (2) 1/4" closed tears along fore-edge fold lines and (2) approx. 1/2" closed tears at binding tab. Interior is clean, and plates are fully intact. Scarce with map. Sold as is, WAF. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Volume 2 has been rebacked with the original leather laid down over the repair. Book opens very stiffly now. It clearly hasn't been read (or even much opened) since the repair was done. 623 pages. Engraved title page and 8 additional plages. Text blocks good and tight. Page edges good a square. Some foxing to the plates and a few of the pages. This is considered to be the first good translation of the work. Previous owner's name and address (California, 1917) on blank page added at the front when this binding was put on. Bound in half red leather with marbled-papered-covered boards, marbled-paper endpapers. Octavo. Wear to leather particularly at hinges, slight splitting at top, corners bumped, wear to boards, occasional tears to some margins, not affecting text, lightly foxed, former owner's signature in neat blue ink to ffeps, a couple of marks to pages but generally clean and bright with clear text, bindings firm and square.
