Pp xx, 829, with a frontispiece plate of Edward John Dent, 154 further b/w plates with hundreds of illustrations and text figures, and 2 colour-plates.Some light spotting of the closed-page edges, otherwise almost fine, in the original red boards/gilt decorated spine and title, and with the very good and unclipped, photo-illustrated, dust-wrapper. Uncommon. TOGETHER WITH the even scarcer Supplement, published as a soft-cover in 1983 [the 1st and only edition], the supplement having minor rubs to the head & tail of its spine but otherwise very good in the original illustrated, black-printed, red thin-card covers. The Supplement takes the pagination from 831 to 891 incl, with a Family Tree, Plates 159-176 incl. and 4 folding or multi-folding technical drawings.
