Frontispiece black and white photo of John Marsh plus 20 black and white captioned photos throughout, one black and white drawing, and two facsimiles. Endpapers are maps. Bibliography and Index. Black (or very dark blue) cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Some wear to extremities with one corner just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine just beginning to fray, spine gilt dulled, cover gilt very slightly dulled, dampstain at extreme bottom right corner of pages just visible along the margins and not affecting text or illustrations, rear cover has several waterspots, all illustrations present and in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacekt. John Marsh [1799-1856], after graduation from Philips Academy, Andover, in his native Massachusetts, and from Harvard (1823) was appointed a tutor to officer's children at Fort Snelling in present day Minnesota. He studied medicine there, then served as an Indian agent in Wisconsin and published a Sioux grammar (1831). In time he made his way to Los Angeles (1836), where he became California's first practicing doctor. He collected fees in cattle hides, which allowed him to buy Los Medanos rancho near Mt. Diablo, on which he ran cattle also collected as fees. He became wealthy, but was also a miserly, cantankerous man. Three of his vaqueros, angered by his bad treatment and low wages, murdered him in 1856. [from A COMPANION TO CALIFORNIA] George D. Lyman [1882-1949] was also a physician, educated at Stanford and Columbia, practicing in San Francisco. Signed by Author(s).
