This is a reprint of the edition originally published by The Neal Publishing Company, 1906; this edition was privately published by Richard D. Mudd, M.D. (1901-2003), the grandson of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd. This edition contains two new chapters: "Descendants of Dr. Samuel Alexander Mudd" prepared by Richard D. Mudd, and "Letters Not in Original Edition--Dr. Mudd's Pardon." There also are two new illustrations: Dr. and Mrs. Richard D. Mudd sitting on the couch on which John Wilkes Booth was examined on April 15, 1865 by Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, and Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Home where Dr. Mudd set Booth's broken leg.

Dr. Mudd is the man who set the broken leg of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, and was convicted of conspiracy in the murder because he did not report Booth's presence to the pursuing authorities.
