Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition First Printing. 8vo. 172 pages. Hardcover bound in blue cloth. Light to moderate wear to the binding. The binding is sound with secure inner hinges, and the text is sound and clean. INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf, "To 'Parhaus'(?) / Frm my author Daddy / Faith G. Rees / Lenten Season / 1935." Laid in loosely is a little flier from Cokesbury Press announcing new books for 1935. We don't know where Edward Jeffries Rees (1895-1970) was born, but he preached in North Carolina and is buried in St. Augustine, Florida. He was associated with Drew Theological Seminary and Duke University. The year following the publication of this book he was preaching at Washington, North Carolina during the Lenten Season (resulting in the 1937 book, "Easter's Path to Pentecost," which we also have listed this week). The Introduction in this book was written by Paul B. Kern of Greensboro, North Carolina. The Acknowledgment in this book was penned in "The Study / First Methodist Episcopal Church, South / Washington, N.C. / New Year's Day, 1935," so it seems he spent a few years in "Little Washington," N.C. " Rosicrucianism is a spiritual and cultural movement which arose in Europe in the early 17th century after the publication of several texts which purported to announce the existence of a hitherto unknown esoteric order to the world and made seeking its knowledge attractive to many. The mysterious doctrine of the order is "built on esoteric truths of the ancient past", which "concealed from the average man, provide insight into nature, the physical universe, and the spiritual realm."The manifestos do not elaborate extensively on the matter, but clearly combine references to Kabbalah, Hermeticism, alchemy, and mystical Christianity.
